Green Iguanas (Iguana iguana)

The natural habitat of the green iguana is the tropical rainforest where they can normally be found basing for log periods in full sunlight early and late in the day.  During midday when the heat is greatest they move in and out of leafy shade.  In their natural environment they are exposed to reflected and diffused UVB in similar amounts to that of the morning and evening sun in which they bask.  From 7 to 11% of UVB was found to penetrate their skin.  In captivity this species can be expected to have a very high UVB requirement since such a small proportion of the UVB light actually penetrates the iguana’s armored hide.
